About hydrocolloid dressing

History of hydrocolloid dressings

For a long time, the types of dressings can be described as endless, from traditional gauze, cotton pads, to biological dressings allogeneic skin, to today's gel-type dressings.  With the development of science and technology, people realize that the purpose of using dressing is far more than covering the wound, the dressing must also help the wound to heal, so it puts forward a new evaluation index for medical dressing, that is, it can control and absorb exudate and block  Bacteria provide a good environment for tissue growth, suitable for gas and water vapor transmission, easy to use and easy to remove.  The new products represented by hydrocolloid dressings are widely used clinically and have achieved satisfactory results.

The advantages of hydrocolloid dressings

Hydrocolloid dressing is a new type of wound dressing widely used in clinic. It is made of elastic polymer hydrogel mixed with synthetic rubber and viscous material. This kind of dressing can absorb a small amount to medium amount of exudate, and its tightness  It can block the invasion of microorganisms, provide a moist environment for wound healing, and at the same time play a part in the purpose of cleansing.  These characteristics can just make up for the shortcomings of the traditional dressing barrier represented by gauze, and can not promote wound healing, and play a certain role in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in all stages.

Hydrocolloid dressings can also promote the synthesis of collagen in epithelial cells, create a hypoxic environment, promote capillary formation, increase capillary blood flow perfusion, and effectively prevent and treat various types of phlebitis.  As a new type of dressing, its clinical application is becoming wider and wider. In addition to the application in pressure sores and phlebitis, it has gradually expanded to wound care, dermatitis prevention and treatment, pipeline fixation and infant care

Application of hydrocolloid dressing

Prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers

Hydrocolloid dressings can be used to prevent pressure sores.  Its mechanism of action is to form low oxygen tension, promote tissue microcirculation, breathable and waterproof, reduce skin shear and friction, and the dressing is translucent, good elasticity, easy to observe local skin conditions, can improve patient comfort.

For stage I pressure ulcers, it is recommended to use hydrocolloid dressing, which is beneficial to repair pressure wounds.  For stage II pressure ulcers, the available dressings are: foam dressing, hydrocolloid dressing, alginate dressing; for stage III-IV pressure ulcers, different dressings can be selected according to the amount of wound exudate.  For shallow pressure ulcers with less exudation and no infection, hydrocolloid dressings are an option.

Prevention and treatment of phlebitis

Hydrocolloid dressings can stimulate the release of macrophages and interleukins, accelerate the resolution of inflammation, and its superior ability to absorb exudate can effectively prevent the occurrence of bacterial phlebitis.

Hydrocolloid dressings can also be used to treat phlebitis, because they can stimulate the release of macrophages and interleukins, promote local blood circulation, accelerate inflammation subside, improve symptoms such as local swelling and pain, and reduce local venous sclerosis, necrosis and Exudation.

Promote acute wound healing

Scratching and contusion is an acute skin injury caused by the combined force of trauma. It is a comorbidity of bruising and contusion. The incidence is high, and the wound surface is often exposed and the pollution is heavy.  Hydrocolloid dressings are airtight dressings, which can form low oxygen tension and promote local blood circulation.

Rapid inflammation subsides, at the same time, it can absorb the exudate and keep the local dry, so that the wound can heal quickly, and no scab is formed during the treatment process.

Protect the surgical incision

Many clinical studies have proved that hydrocolloid dressing can reduce postoperative wound pain, promote wound healing and reduce scar formation. Studies have used hydrocolloid dressings for gynecological surgery, hypospadias, and ureterocutaneous ostomy for total bladder excision. The number of dressing changes is reduced, the healing time is shortened, and there is no obvious wound infection.

Treatment of catheterized dermatitis

With the popularization of PICC catheterization technology, many studies have found that prolonged indwelling PICC and repeated dressing changes make the skin around the puncture site prone to allergic dermatitis, which affects the rest and sleep of patients. In severe cases, even extubation is required. PICC patients after catheterization  The conventional fixing method is mainly based on a transparent film, and the fixing effect is better, but the permeability is poor.

Hydrocolloid dressing fixation has the advantages of good adhesion, strong debridement ability, and good fluid absorption capacity. It is more effective than sterile gauze fixation in the treatment of elderly patients with contact dermatitis after PICC catheterization, which effectively reduces the age of PICC catheterization.  The incidence of infection, detubation, and displacement in patients with post-contact dermatitis promotes the recovery of dermatitis, and is worthy of clinical application.

Fixed venous catheter

Because of its breathable and impermeable properties, hydrocolloid dressings can block microorganisms outside the skin, and can absorb exudate and keep the puncture site dry, thereby reducing the chance of infection at the puncture point. It can be used for the fixation of intravenous catheters or indwelling needles.

Protect the skin of infants and young children

Hydrocolloid is also an ideal dressing for infants and young children. It can form tension locally, promote local blood circulation, accelerate the resolution of inflammation, reduce pain caused by drugs, and actively and effectively protect blood vessels.  At the same time, children will not feel pain when tearing off the hydrocolloid dressing.

Summary

Hydrocolloid dressing is a new type of wound dressing developed under the guidance of the principle of wet healing. It has the advantages of keeping the wound moist, absorbing exudate, autolytic debridement, accelerating wound healing, and protecting exposed nerve endings.
